The rescue did not come.
from the Coda
You did.
What This Book Is
This is not a memoir. It is also not, exactly, a self-help book. It is a set of practices and observations that have made remaining possible, for the author and for many of the people he has worked with as a therapist, in the absence of the rescue narratives that did not hold.
The book is for anyone who has prayed, in some shape, for the rescue to come, and has discovered, in some way, that the rescue is not coming. The class is large. The chapters can be read in order or out of order. The book is a companion. The companion does not require your continuous attention. It is here when you want to come back.
Six Sections
I. The God Who Did Not Come
What happens when faith frameworks meet the edge. The silence that remains when the rescue narratives stop working.
II. The Others
The brutal math of relationships. Disappointment, prophecy, loyalty, and knowing when to walk.
III. The Cost
Discernment and what it takes from you. The loss of innocence, and the loneliness that comes with clarity.
IV. The Erotic
Desire that survives disappointment. The body, being chosen, being used, and the difference between the two.
V. The Grief That Stays
Grief as a permanent resident. What was not given. What you had to become. The dead who stay dead.
VI. The Practice
What remains when the frameworks fall away. Morning protocols, joy as practice, non-human company, and making things when outcomes don't matter.
Who This Book Is For
If you have hit the edge and discovered the same silence the woman in the bathroom discovered, and you are trying to keep being a person inside that silence, this book is for you.
It does not promise recovery. It does not promise that everything happens for a reason. It offers a clear-eyed account of what is possible, in this life, for someone who has stopped pretending to know things they do not know.
